Sterling Heights speeds up trash collection with new landfill site

By Hawke Fracassa / The Detroit News
Trash will leave Sterling Heights faster after holidays now that the city has added a new landfill in northern Macomb County, city officials promise.

The Pine Tree Acres landfill owned by Detroit-based City Management Corp. at 29 Mile and Gratiot in Lenox Township is expected to get its first truckloads of trash after the July Fourth holiday. City Management routinely hauls Sterling Heights' trash.

"My garbage is usually picked up by Friday at 6:30 a.m.," said Councilman Jay Pollard. "(But) because of backups caused by holidays, my garbage never got picked up until 3:30 in the afternoon on Saturday.

"Now, because we have a new primary site, the trucks can unload the trash faster and get it off the street faster. I see this as a real benefit to our homeowners."

About 43,000 homes in Sterling Heights are affected by the new trash deal.

Resident Joe Munem sees the change as positive for his neighborhood.

"I don't like seeing trash on the street," he said. "Trash doesn't take a holiday. As a property owner, I view this as a real plus."

Guy Kebbe, superintendent of the public works department in Sterling Heights, said the city also will continue to dump rubbish at an Auburn Hills landfill owned by Wayne Disposal, a trash-disposal company.

David Shepherd, sales manager of the solid waste division of Wayne Disposal, said the city's decision to dispose of trash at the Lenox Township site will get garbage off the street faster because the trucks will be able to dump more loads in a day for more hours.
